The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is all set to develop a unique automated sound classifier to identify and differentiate sounds beneath and around coastal waters. This project is a HMM based Target Classifier with improved success rates and Rs 43.55 Lakh has been sanctioned by the Naval Research Board and the Government of India. The main intention behind this project is to develop a classifier which would enable to differentiate specifically each and every sound in the Indian Ocean, whether it is a small ship or a submarine. This project is aimed at the betterment of coastal security of the country as sometimes the sound of a ship approaching is hindered by the other sounds in the ocean.
